Lab-grown gemstones have become common enough that most buyers will run into the choice at some point — often without realising it, since a lab-grown stone can look identical to a natural one to the naked eye. Here’s what actually separates them, and why the distinction matters for what you’re paying for.

Chemically identical, differently formed

A lab-grown gemstone has essentially the same chemical composition and crystal structure as its natural counterpart — a lab-grown sapphire is still corundum, a lab-grown emerald is still beryl. The difference is formation: a natural stone crystallised underground over geological time, while a lab-grown stone crystallises in a controlled chamber over weeks or months. Distinguishing the two reliably usually requires gemological equipment, not the naked eye.

Why the price gap exists if the material is the same

Rarity is the short answer. Natural gemstone formation depends on a specific, uncommon set of geological conditions, and every natural stone is unique in its inclusions and growth history. Lab-grown stones can be produced predictably and repeatably, which is exactly why they cost a fraction of an equivalent natural stone — you’re not paying a scarcity premium.

Which one should you buy?

  • Choose natural if provenance, rarity, and the stone’s geological origin matter to you — most fine jewellery and investment-minded buyers default here, and it’s what certification bodies focus their origin reporting on.
  • Choose lab-grown if you want the same look and durability at a materially lower price, or you specifically prefer a lower-impact production process.
  • Either way, insist on disclosure. A reputable seller will always tell you which you’re buying — if that information isn’t offered upfront, ask before you pay.
